Forensic Science Project

Introduction

As part of the forensic science unit, you and your class have an opportunity to participate in forensic entomology research with researchers from Simon Fraser University (SFU). Using simple collection techniques your class can collect and identify insects for SFU research. Samples of the insects will then be sent to the labs for further study. The goal of the project is to collect samples insects from all over Canada. This will provide the scientists at SFU several different avenues of study. Initially, they will be able to examine the DNA from the same species of insect, but from different parts of Canada. This will allow them to determine if there is a genetic difference in DNA due to location. This information could be very valuable where it would be necessary to determine the location of the crime.

Having students participate in this project is an exciting way to have them involved in scientific research and connect what they have learned in class to situations outside the classroom. To participate in this portion of the forensic science unit (and to have access to the assessment tasks) you will need to register into the forensic science project. The introduction page has all the information on how to join. Once you receive your password you will have access to teacher information and student information on the research component of the forensic science project.
